Touch LED Screen

The screens of the mobile phones and tablets we use daily usually support touch functions, which allows us to perform various interactive operations, thus greatly improving the functionality and efficiency of electronic products. So, can we also achieve touch functions on an LED screen?

The answer is yes. On LED screens, we can also achieve touch functions similar as a touch LCD or OLED screen. So, how can we do that? Let’s proceed and learn.

How to achieve touch LED screen

The touch screens we see in daily life are generally resistive touch screens or capacitive touch screens. But if we want to achieve touch function on an LED screen, then we need to use LED display panels with an additional frame, which can emit infrared lines and also sensors that can detect infrared interference.

Generally speaking, the infrared emission frame is slightly higher than the surface of the LED display panel, and the intersection point of each two vertically crossed infrared rays is located directly above the middle position of a single pixel of the LED screen, so that all the infrared rays emitted form a grid-like infrared combination on the LED display panel. When our fingers move on the surface of the LED display panel, these infrared rays will be interfered with.

At this time, the sensor of the infrared emission frame can sense the interference, obtain the exact position of the interference point, and feedback to the control system, thereby achieving the effect of the touch screen.

Advantages of LED screen infrared touch function

Relatively speaking, the principle of LED screens realizing touch function through infrared rays is relatively simple. As long as we master the basic principles of the technology and match it with suitable products, we can realize it without adding additional coatings on the screen surface or connecting other controllers.

Another advantage of using infrared rays to realize touch function is that infrared rays are not affected by current, voltage and static electricity, have extremely high stability, and can be used in harsh outdoor environments.

In addition, when infrared touch screens are working, they do not require the charging and discharging process of capacitive touch screens, so they respond faster than capacitive touch screens.

Shortcomings of touch LED screen

Of course, the LED screen that uses infrared sensing technology to achieve touch function also has some disadvantages that cannot be ignored, such as relatively limited size, increased screen thickness, and poor light intensity tolerance.

First, to realize the touch function on the LED screen, an additional frame that emits external light and senses infrared interference is required. This obviously has a significant impact on the seamless splicing performance of the LED display panel, and it is difficult to achieve an oversized LED screen. The size of our common touch LED screen is generally limited to 15 to 46 inches.

On the other hand, the additional infrared emission and sensing frame will also be slightly higher than the surface of the LED display panel, which undoubtedly increases the overall thickness of the LED screen. Therefore, the LED screen with touch function will be more bulky and occupy more space.

In addition, touch LED screens generally do not allow direct exposure to bright light, especially strong sunlight. Therefore, touch LED screens are mainly used in indoor environments, such as conference rooms, indoor exhibition halls, etc.

Advantages of touch LED screen when compared with other types of touch screens

Although the touch LED screen still has some obvious shortcomings at present, it still has its unique advantages compared with other touch screens, which mainly come from the advantages of the LED itself and the simplicity of infrared touch technology.

  1. Better protection

Compared with LCD and OLED screens, LED screens have better protection and can withstand certain impacts. In addition, LED screens can replace single damaged LED lamp beads, and the maintenance cost is also low.

  1. Reliable and durable

The service life of LED is generally more than 5 years, and there will be no obvious light decay; and if used reasonably and with some daily maintenance, the life of the LED screen can even be more than 10 years.

  1. Relatively lower overall cost

The long service life of the LED screen ensures that we do not need to replace it during use, which also significantly reduces its overall cost of use.

  1. Lower technical requirement

As mentioned earlier, to realize the touch LED screen, you only need to add a frame with infrared emission and sensing functions, without the relatively complex screen technology of resistive and capacitive touch screens.

Conclusion

At present, touch LED screens are mainly used in some small indoor scenes, and are relatively not a particularly popular option. Nevertheless, the unique advantages of touch LED screens, such as low cost, high efficiency and energy saving, and durability, have also made up for the shortcomings of other types of touch screens to a certain extent, filling the market gap in some special application scenarios. We have reason to expect that in the near future, with the further development of touch technology and LED screen manufacturing technology, the application of touch LED screens will become more extensive.
