Report says, the sales of LG’s MAGNIT Micro LED have nearly doubled every year in the past four years. That explains the future development trend of LED products, that is, smaller and smaller pixel pitches of the screen. Let’s explore more details about the report.
LG said its information display business has maintained steady growth since 2019, with an average annual sales increase of 7%.
And since its MAGNIT Micro LED display was launched in 2020, its sales have almost doubled every year on average over the past four years.
LG’s commercial display business, which includes high-end signage and hotel TVs, is part of the company’s B2B division, and LG plans to achieve annual revenue of 10 trillion won (about US$7.3 billion) by 2030. The goal is to have B2B account for 45% of the company’s total sales. Other parts of the B2B portfolio include high-end laptops, medical displays and electric vehicle chargers.
In addition, LG plans to expand its display solution business with products tailored for various spaces. And focus on high-end small-pitch LED signage (including all-in-one LED and Micro LED models) to ensure that sales of this type of LED products achieve double-digit percentage growth every year.
Spearheading this expansion is the LG MAGNIT Micro LED Display, which is available in a variety of form factors, including an all-in-one model for conference rooms, a model designed for virtual production studios, a high-end home theater version and a model with a separate power supply unit.
Report also says, LG’s next-generation Micro LED products will integrate AI technology to improve image quality and are expected to be launched later this year.
In a briefing with Korean reporters, LG said that AI has been applied to the production process and used to create intelligent image quality algorithms.
As part of the manufacturing process, AI is used to evaluate and select the approximately 25 million LED chips for the product (based on the 136-inch model).
At the same time, the AI processor applied to LG’s new generation Micro LED display can also analyze and optimize color and brightness in real time.
Micro LED is a new display technology utilizing micro light emitting diodes.
The display principle of Micro LED is to thin-film, miniaturize, and array the LED structure design, and its size is only about 1 to 10 microns (μm).
This technology transfers μLEDs to a circuit substrate (including lower electrodes and transistors) in batches. The substrate can be a rigid, flexible, transparent or opaque substrate. Subsequently, a physical deposition process is used to complete the protective layer and upper electrode, and then the upper substrate can be packaged, thereby completing a Micro LED display with a simple structure.
The core structure of Micro LED is a PN junction diode, which is composed of direct bandgap semiconductor materials.
When the upper and lower electrodes apply a forward bias to the μLED, causing current to pass through, electrons and holes recombine in the active region, thereby emitting a single color light.
The main wavelength full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the Micro LED emission spectrum is only about 20 nanometers (nm), which can provide extremely high color saturation, usually greater than 120% NTSC.
Micro LED has significant advantages over OLED technology. It doesn’t rely on organic materials, so it’s more durable, brighter, and has no aging or burn-in issues. This makes Micro LED outstanding in terms of durability and brightness, making it suitable for various demanding display application scenarios.
