When we walk on a crowded street, we often see various LED screens. Some are put up onto the walls of tall buildings, some work as glass curtains of shopping malls, some become partitions inside a building. All these nice LED screens become beautiful scenery of the city and attract great attention among the crowd. Usually, we call these LED screens that are fixedly installed in a certain location and need to operate for a long time as fixed LED screens. Today, let’s learn about all aspects of fixed LED displays in detail.

fixed LED display

What is fixed LED display

Fixed LED screens refers to those LED screens that are fixedly installed in specific places or locations through specially designed fastening structures or built support structures.

Generally speaking, fixed LED screens are mainly found in commercial centers with dense traffic, transportation hubs, or places or venues where important public information needs to be played for a long time.

Types of fixed LED display

Usually, we categorize fixed LED screens into indoors and outdoors since there are obvious differences in performance and characteristics between the two.

  1. Indoor fixed LED screen

Indoor fixed LED screens refer to those used in indoor scenes. Generally speaking, indoor fixed LED screens are often being watched at close range, so they usually use smaller LEDs and achieve smaller pixel pitch to ensure clarity when viewed at a close distance.

  1. Outdoor fixed LED screen

Outdoor fixed LED screens refer to those LED screens that are installed in outdoor places in various ways. Generally speaking, outdoor fixed LED screens have higher requirements for waterproof and dust-proof performance, and resistance to harsh outdoor weather conditions.

Features of fixed LED displays

In the previous section, we briefly introduced the classification of fixed LED screens. Among them, indoor fixed LED screens do not have distinct characteristics because they do not need to withstand the test of complex outdoor conditions. So here in this section, we’ll introduce some common features of outdoor fixed LED screens.

  1. Energy efficient

Outdoor fixed LED screens often need to run for a long time, even 7*24 hours. Energy consumption is often one of the most important performance indicators of fixed LED screens. Fixed LED screens with lower energy consumption not only save operating costs, but also means reduction of the consumption of natural resource, which is more in line with the requirements of sustainable development.

  1. Reliable and durable

Another notable feature of fixed LED screens is their reliability and durability. A fixed LED screen that can operate stably for a long time can not only reduce the increased investment in manpower and material resources caused by frequent maintenance, but also reduce the decline in advertising revenue caused by unstable screens.

  1. High protection

Outdoor fixed LED screens often need to withstand the test of outdoor conditions such as humid weather, heavy rainfall, and dust, so high protection performance, that is, excellent waterproof and dustproof performance, is also one of its essential characteristics. Generally, the protection level of outdoor fixed LED screens can reach IP65 or above, which can completely prevent the intrusion of dust and cope with almost all common rainy weather.

  1. Weather resistant

For some fixed-installed LED screens used in extremely cold or extremely high temperature areas, they need to have certain low-temperature resistance or high-temperature resistance properties.

  1. Ultra high brightness

In outdoor environments, strong sunlight or other light will have a significant impact on the display effect of LED screens with low brightness. Therefore, outdoor fixed LED screens usually have ultra-high brightness, usually up to several thousand nits, to ensure that the screen content is still clearly visible under ultra-strong outdoor light conditions.

  1. Wide viewing angle

Outdoor fixed LED screens are usually installed in relatively conspicuous places, and their installation positions are often high or far away from the target group, so as to play visual content to people from different directions. Therefore, the viewing angle of fixed LED screens is usually as high as 140° or more.

Fixed LED screen brightness and ambient light intensity

As we all know, the brightness of indoor LED screens generally only needs to be a few hundred nits to ensure the visibility of its content, and the maximum generally does not exceed one or two thousand nits. The brightness of outdoor fixed LED screens is much higher.

  1. Common outdoor light environment

When fixed LED screens are mainly used in ordinary outdoor light environments, their brightness is generally 2000 – 3000 nits.

  1. Direct sunshine environment

If a fixed LED screen needs to face strong direct sunshine, it is necessary to ensure that its brightness is above 5000 nits.

Fixed LED display pixel pitch and viewing distance

In most application scenarios, the expected installation location of fixed LED screens is generally specific and cannot be adjusted at will; at the same time, the viewing distance is also limited by specific application scenarios and is also a relatively fixed range. Therefore, when purchasing fixed LED screens, we must choose a relatively suitable pixel pitch to obtain the best visual effect.

Some people believe that the best viewing distance for LED screens is the pixel pitch value * 1.3 * 1000 (mm). For example, the best viewing distance for a P2.0 LED screen is 2.6 meters. Based on this formula, we can also calculate the appropriate pixel pitch of the screen based on the installation height and distance of the fixed LED screen.

Of course, this is just a way to estimate the viewing distance according to pixel pitch. In addition, we can also refer to the following table to further understand the relationship between the pixel pitch and viewing distance of the fixed LED screen.

Pixel Pitch (mm) Best Viewing Distance (m)
2.00 3.44
3.00 5.16
4.00 6.88
5.00 8.60
6.00 10.31
7.00 12.03
8.00 13.75
9.00 15.47
10.00 17.19

In the above table, we can see that the optimal viewing distance of a P2.0 LED screen is 3.44 meters, which is quite different from the result (i.e. 2.6 meters) obtained by the formula mentioned above.

From these different opinions, we can be see that the relationship between the pixel pitch of an LED screen and the viewing distance is not that absolute. We can only obtain certain reference values through some relevant methods.

So in practical applications, we should try to combine the actual situation and make reasonable evaluations to avoid the situation where the LED screen cannot achieve the best visual effect after installation.

Common application scenarios of fixed LED display

Usually, fixed LED screens appear at these locations.

  1. Commercial centers

Fixed LED screens are usually found in pedestrian streets and commercial centers. They are mainly used to play commercial advertisements, guide potential customers through highly visually attractive content, and thus increase the transaction rate of related products or services.

  1. Traffic hubs

We can also see various forms of fixed LED screens in places such as airports, train stations, and bus hubs. They are generally used to broadcast real-time traffic information, release important announcements, and play commercial advertisements for surrounding businesses.

  1. Control rooms

In some security or traffic control centers, there are often large fixed LED screens to provide real-time monitoring information, thereby assisting in the smooth implementation of traffic diversion or safety emergency work.

  1. Conference and exhibition centers

In some large conference and exhibition centers, fixed LED screens are usually used to play conference-related content or exhibit products with immersive visual contents.

Of course, the above are just the main application scenarios of fixed LED screens. In fact, fixed LED screens can also appear in government office buildings or public service agencies, usually used to display important announcements, etc.

And some small businesses with relatively fixed business locations will also use relatively low-cost or smaller-sized fixed LED screens to attract the attention of passers-by.

Things to consider when using fixed LED display

Although most fixed LED screens, especially outdoor fixed LED screens, have good protection and weather resistance, we still need to pay attention to the following details when installing and using fixed LED screens to ensure safety and stable operation.

‌Installation location and environment‌:

Choose a suitable installation location, ensure the viewing angle and distance are appropriate, and avoid blind spots. At the same time, keep the ambient temperature between -20℃ and 50℃, and the humidity between 10% and 90%RH, and avoid high temperature and high humidity environments‌.

‌Installation process‌:

During the installation process, pay attention to the flatness and stability of the screen, ensure that the screen is firmly installed, the wiring is correct, and avoid signal transmission problems. The specific steps include splicing profiles, assembling the outer frame, installing the unit board, fixing the back bar, connecting the cable and power supply, and finally testing whether the screen is installed correctly.

‌Power supply and protection‌:

Ensure stable power supply, use 220V±10% power supply (depending on the country or region), avoid using AC power supply and reverse positive and negative poles. At the same time, do a good job of lightning protection and grounding protection, and avoid using it in bad weather.

‌Use and maintenance‌:

Avoid turning on the screen in full white color, and avoid operating at the highest brightness for a long time. Clean the screen regularly to prevent dust and moisture from entering the screen. Turn on the control computer before turning on the screen, and turn off the screen power and control software when turning off the screen.

‌Safety and stability‌:

Ensure that the screen has a stable bracket and structure, especially when installed outdoors. Take waterproof and moisture-proof measures to avoid the screen from collapsing or being damaged. Regularly check the screen’s heat dissipation and cooling system to ensure stability during long-term use.

Kinglight LEDs for high end fixed screens

Earlier this year, an outdoor fixed LED screen in Malaysia suddenly caught fire during maintenance, trapping maintenance personnel. The incident attracted widespread attention in the industry around the world. Report said that the fire was caused by a short circuit at the bottom of the LED screen. Although the fire did not cause severe loss, it still remind us to pay more attention to safety while using LED screens.

Generally speaking, outdoor fixed LED screens not only need to run for a long time, but also need to deal with strong outdoor light. However, some low-end or inferior fixed LED screens often use cheap materials, which seriously affects the heat dissipation performance and becomes a possible factor causing the LED screen to catch fire.

LEDs , as the most basic electronic components of an LED screen, also have a crucial impact on the heat dissipation performance.

Generally speaking, common LEDs on the market use iron frames to reduce production costs, but the thermal conductivity of iron is only 60W/mK, so the thermal conductivity performance of the LED is poor.

But Kinglight LEDs for high end fixed screens all use copper frames.

Kinglight KS Series LEDs provide 5 years ultra long warranty

As we all know, the copper has a thermal conductivity of 401W/mK, and beats iron onto ground. So it’s easy to understand that LEDs using copper frames dissipate heat efficiently.

In addition, Kinglight LEDs for high-end fixed screen can achieve ultra-high brightness display under low voltage and low current.

But when using low quality screens with other inferior LEDs, you need to increase the current to achieve ultra-high brightness. Increasing current also means a temperature increase of the screen, which in return causes light decay of the LEDs and even result in fire.
