India government has given official approval for the country’s first miniLED and microLED factory in Dholera, Gujarat. This $334 million project marks a major milestone for India’s domestic display manufacturing sector, as the nation moves to develop high-end LED technology locally instead of relying on imports.

Project Basics: Investment, Operator & Production Capacity

The new miniLED and microLED factory is developed by Hyderabad-based firm Crystal Matrix Ltd. The total investment stands at ₹3,068 crore, around 334 million US dollars.

The facility is designed with an annual output of 72,000 square meters of display panels. Unlike ordinary assembly workshops for display products, this plant integrates complete upstream production lines for core components.

Core GaN Technology Powers India’s LED Manufacturing

A key advantage of this India miniLED microLED factory is its built-in gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductor processing lines. GaN is the core material for high-performance miniLED and microLED displays.

Local GaN production allows the company to finish critical chip and wafer manufacturing on-site. It helps tighten quality control, improve display performance and build a more stable local supply chain for LED products.

Besides in-house production, the site will also run as a GaN foundry. It will provide contract manufacturing services to other brands, supporting the growth of India’s overall display industry.

Wide Uses for MiniLED & MicroLED Display Modules

The display modules made at this miniLED and microLED factory serve multiple industries. They are not limited to commercial screens and digital signage.

The products can be applied to smart TVs, tablets, smartphones, in-car displays, XR glasses and smartwatches. It covers consumer electronics, automotive displays, wearable devices and professional AV equipment.

Production Timeline: First MicroLED Screens in 22 Months

Ashwini Vaishnaw, India’s Minister of Electronics and IT, announced a clear timeline for the project. The first batch of microLED screens from this new factory will officially launch in 22 months.

Industry insiders agree that this project is far more than a new production line. It proves India is independently building high-end LED technology, rather than just buying finished products overseas.

India Gains Traction as a Global LED Manufacturing Hub

The launch of the Crystal Matrix miniLED and microLED factory further lifts India’s position in the global LED market. Recently, UK brand LEDsynergy shifted its main LED display production to a fully automated factory in Gujarat.

Digital signage consultancy invidis also notes that India has become a strong candidate to be a global LED manufacturing hub. More international production chains are now moving to the region.

Current Challenges for India’s Display Industry

Even with this landmark miniLED and microLED factory, the local industry still faces notable challenges.

Crystal Matrix remains a small company with limited capital and no prior experience in semiconductor fabrication. In addition, India has not yet formed a complete upstream and downstream component ecosystem for displays.

According to industry analysis, India will need another 2 to 5 years to build a mature domestic supply chain for display parts.
