On Wikipedia, we can see the following description: Metaverse, also known as metaphysical universe, meta-realm, super-sensory space, virtual space, is a 3D virtual world network focusing on social connection. From it, we easily know that the metaverse is a social network based on the 3D virtual world. Then, it comes to the topic today, the key to metaverse, the LEDs for extended reality or virtual production displays.

LED Packaging Methods for XR and VP LED Displays

 

LED displays used for extend reality and virtual production purposes are the key to realizing the Metaverse; and depending on the actual application scenario, the packaging methods being utilized for XR/VP displays are also different. At present, the mainstream packaging method is the SMD; other available methods can be the IDM and COB LEDs.

SMD stands for surface mount device, which is a type of LED that incorporates red, green, and blue LED chips into a single module. We can call this module an SMD LED, which is the single pixel on an LED display. There are two different packaging technologies being widely used for making SMD LED, the CHIP and the TOP LED packaging. But for making XR/VP LED displays, TOP LEDs are more popular options.

 

TOP LED packaging follows procedures like die attach, wire bonding, encapsulation, baking, slicing, sorting and bin classification, and tape and reel packaging.

IMD LED Packaging

 

IMD stands for integrated matric device. It can be also named as 4-in-1 LED, which integrates 4 LED pixels into a single device. Thus, it has 12 LED chips, 4 each for red, green, and blue.

 

The general procedures of IMD LED packaging includes die attach, wire bonding, molding, baking, slicing, sorting and bin classification, and tape and reel packaging.

COB LED Packaging

 

COB stands for chip on board, which means packaging LED chips directly on board. COB does not need individual LEDs, but directly mounts multiple LED chips on the display motherboard and then packages them together.

 

The process of COB LED packaging is generally as follows: printing, die attaching, reflow soldering, AOI, lighting test, rework, and lamination.

High Quality XR/VP LED Displays are key to Metaverse

 

XR/VP LED displays are the key to Metaverse, and high quality LEDs are the core components of XR/VP LED displays. That means only LEDs featuring realistic display effect, and high reliability and stability can be used for the manufacturing of XR/VP LED displays. The defective rate of LEDs should be less than 10PPM; the surface also needs to be matte treated to reduce the light reflection on the surface of the LEDs, ensure high consistency of the surface, and guarantee the uniformity of the display effect.

Under P1.9/18 scanning, the brightness of the LED display panel can reach 2000 nits or even higher; it adopts a large viewing angle design, that is, the functional area adopts a separate structure (to prevent “caterpillar” phenomenon, which is a symptom of  faulty displaying of the same colors in a line or in a row), RGB solid welding is in a straight line, the chip margin is shortened, and the LED chips are far away from the cup wall, thereby expanding the display angle; using a low-speed mold, the mold cavity is more convenient to pour plastic, and the demolding is smoother, ensuring the fullness and high consistency of the plastic, improving the flatness of the pins, reducing the size difference and reducing the faulty darker or brighter display effect from different viewing angles on an LED display caused by improper SMT process, and improving the overall display effect.

 

 

In addition, Kinglight has also launched the 1515RGBW LED; unlike conventional RGB LEDs, 1515RGBW LED can achieve a color rendering index of up to 90 by introducing an additional white light source, thereby significantly improving the color rendering accuracy of the LED display and further ensure the realistic effect of virtual production.

The circular LED stage standing in the middle of the water built for the CCTV Mid-Autumn Festival Gala held in Zhangjiagang, Suzhou in 2022 used display made of Kinglight 1415-XR LEDs, which perfectly integrates the “circular” shape of the stage with the real landscape around it; in addition, the large LED backdrops used in the gala are also built with Kinglight 1415-XR LEDs. Through the combination of the circular LED stage and the backdrop LED displays, the real scene and virtual images are set off against each other to create the beautiful Jiangnan water town characteristics, presenting the festive atmosphere of “Mid-Autumn Full Moon”, setting off the “circle” theme of the Mid-Autumn Festival, and well interpreting the festival concept of Mid-Autumn Festival and family reunion.
