Daktronics to Close Irish Factory in $18 Million Cost-Cutting Plan

Optronics Industry | 2026-10-27

Daktronics plans to close its manufacturing facility in Ireland as part of a broader restructuring aimed at reducing operating costs and improving manufacturing efficiency. The US-based display technology company expects the measures to generate more than $18 million in annualized pre-tax savings once fully implemented.

Announced on October 14, 2026, the plan includes changes to the company’s global manufacturing network, a reduction in certain international business activities, and a scaled-back approach to micro-LED development.

Ireland Factory Closure Planned for 2028

Daktronics will begin a phased exit from its manufacturing operations in Ennistymon, County Clare, Ireland. The company expects the closure to be substantially complete by mid-fiscal 2028.

The Ireland factory closure is expected to result in approximately $13.5 million in cumulative pre-tax charges, including employee-related expenses, facility wind-down costs, equipment transfers, and potential asset impairments.

Once the exit is complete, the company anticipates annualized pre-tax savings of approximately $7.7 million from this measure alone.

Daktronics said it is working with existing customers to plan production for outstanding orders and build sufficient spare-parts inventory to meet its warranty and service commitments during the transition.

The decision is linked to the company’s plan to exit highly customized portions of its international transportation business, which serves rail, bus, and roadway customers outside North America.

Production Capacity to Shift Across Three Countries

The company has completed the first production run at its new Mexican facility and is expanding its manufacturing capabilities in China. As part of this expansion, it plans to move into a leased facility spanning approximately 355,000 square feet to support more automated production.

Daktronics will also seek to improve capacity utilization and operational efficiency at its US factories.

These manufacturing changes are expected to generate approximately $7 million in annualized net savings when fully implemented. The company intends to allocate production across the three countries according to product types, customer requirements, and delivery timelines.

For North American intelligent transportation systems, production will remain primarily based in US facilities.

International Operations to Be Streamlined

The restructuring also extends beyond manufacturing.

Daktronics plans to close its Hong Kong and Macau offices as part of an effort to simplify its Asia-Pacific operations. The company intends to serve customers across the region through a more consolidated operating structure.

It will also discontinue the highly customized portions of its international transportation business, which account for approximately 1.5% of total company revenue.

These measures are intended to reduce operational complexity and allow the company to focus on international markets and business opportunities with stronger growth and profitability potential.

Daktronics to Reduce Micro-LED Development Activities

Daktronics is also revising its micro-LED development strategy as part of the cost-reduction plan.

After acquiring certain assets and intellectual property from X Display Company Technology Limited in December 2025, the company added micro-LED and micro-IC development capabilities to its technology portfolio.

It now plans to reduce micro-LED-related development activities while retaining the acquired intellectual property and preserving opportunities for future commercialization.

According to the company, the decision reflects the supply and cost advantages currently available in narrow-pixel-pitch LED technology, as well as the investment required to commercialize micro-LED products.

The associated measures are expected to generate approximately $3.1 million in annualized pre-tax savings.

Cost Savings Expected to Build Through Fiscal 2028

Daktronics expects the full restructuring program to generate more than $18 million in annualized incremental pre-tax savings once the measures reach their full run rate, anticipated by mid-fiscal 2028.

The company estimates approximately $15.8 million in non-recurring pre-tax restructuring and related charges during implementation, including around $7 million in the second quarter of fiscal 2027.

The announced measures combine manufacturing network changes, international business simplification, and reduced micro-LED development spending. Together, they form part of Daktronics’ broader effort to improve factory utilization, reduce fixed costs, and focus resources on business areas offering stronger long-term returns.
